Abstract

The evolving dynamics of academic library instruction address the challenge of enhancing students' hands-on experience and engagement with library technologies, particularly among library science students who are future librarians. This study investigates the impact of the university library's collaboration with faculty courses on student learning outcomes, practical skill acquisition and digital readiness. The initiative investigations between the Islamic Science University of Malaysia and the International Islamic University Malaysia, where students were exposed to both theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on in cataloguing, digital archiving, metadata standards, digital resource management, integrated library systems, and library management within their respective university libraries. The research objectives were to evaluate students’ technical competencies in utilizing digital library systems, to measure student engagement and confidence in applying library technologies, and to assess the effectiveness of librarian-led instruction in classroom environment. Data was collected through structured questionnaires distributed to participating students and analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine levels of skills acquisition and engagement. The results reveal significant improvements in students' competencies in cataloguing, metadata application, and digital resource management. The student assessment metrics reported enhancements in using library systems and demonstrated a better understanding of institutional library workflows. These findings highlight the value of embedding librarian expertise into academic delivery and show that authentic, practice-based learning enhances student preparedness for digital information careers. This collaboration strengthens the role of academic libraries in education and in sharing knowledge and resources. The study recommends that academic programs integrate librarian-led practicum components into their curricula as a model for enhancing student outcomes. The expected findings underscore the need for further research into the long-term impact of such collaborations on graduates’ professional readiness and their adaptability to evolving digital ecosystems. It repositions academic libraries not merely as information repositories but as active contributors to student development, and long-term educational sustainability.
