Abstract

This study aims at deriving critical thinking characteristics and standards in the light of Prophet Ibrahim’s dialogues pertaining to ‘Aqidah which are mentioned in the Quran as means of integrating revealed knowledge and human science knowledge. The significance of the study is apparent in relating the science of ‘Aqidah to critical thinking aspects through contextual analysis of the above-mentioned debates to clarify the manifestation of critical thinking standards in these selected Quranic verses, as to utilize it in contemporary dawah dialogues, to disseminate the message of Tawhid and to promote the culture of dialogue among Muslim communities. The added value of the study is to emphasize precedence of Quranic reveled texts in advocating critical thinking and its standards before the Western scholars embarked on. The researchers applied inductive method by exploring the narrated scholastic exegesis regarding the selected verses then applying the analytical method to verify the Quranic promotion of critical thinking and the application of its standards which is acknowledged by contemporary authorities in the field. The study came to some conclusions such as: that prophet Ibrahim peace be upon him is characterized with applying critical thinking standards in all his dialogues, avoiding fanaticism and bias. Another one is it clearly showed some important critical thinking standards such as: clarity, accuracy, depth, relevance and inquisitiveness. It also showed some of the critical characteristics such as: the need for promoting it as a culture, acquiring its tools such as inferring and concluding inquisitiveness and the ability to view issues from other people sides. Besides it showed the fact that Quranic text applied various aspects of what is emphasized by contemporary critical thinking studies through prophets’ dialogues with their nations. Finally, the study pointed out the need for studying the prophetic dialogues in the Quran for the purpose of finding out more critical thinking standards and its applications in debates and dialogues pertaining to Aqidah specially with opponents.
