Abstract

A study design serves as a systematic plan for data collection. The selection of an appropriate design is essential for effectively addressing the research questions. This chapter presents a comprehensive overview of research methodologies, categorized into qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method approaches. Qualitative research methods, such as grounded theory, ethnography, phenomenology, and case studies, are emphasized for their effectiveness in conducting in-depth explorations of behaviors, life experiences, and perspectives. These methods are particularly valuable for comprehending the underlying mechanisms and rationales of phenomena, providing nuanced insights into intricate and context-dependent situations. Conversely, quantitative methods, such as descriptive, correlational, causal-comparative, and experimental research designs, focus on measuring variables, testing hypotheses, and analyzing relationships with statistical precision. Mixed-method designs, which integrate qualitative and quantitative approaches, are also reviewed with an emphasis on convergent parallel, explanatory and exploratory sequential, and embedded designs. This integration is often necessary to provide a comprehensive understanding of research problems. Additionally, the chapter explores essential concepts related to population and sampling, encompassing sampling techniques, sample size determination, and effective recruitment strategies.
