Abstract
Zoos play a critical role in wildlife conservation, public education, and tourism. However, ensuring the safety and security of both animals and visitors remains an ongoing challenge, particularly in the Malaysian context. The risks associated with zoonotic disease outbreaks, animal escapes, and security breaches pose serious concerns, highlighting the need for clear and enforceable safety and security policies. While significant efforts have been made by zoo authorities and governing bodies, a comprehensive framework tailored to Malaysia’s unique environment has yet to be developed. This book, A Study on Physical Safety and Security Policy for Malaysian Zoos, examines this crucial issue by evaluating current safety guidelines implemented in Malaysian zoos and comparing them with international best practices, specifically from the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates. Drawing on a combination of doctrinal research and expert interviews, the study provides insights into the strengths and gaps in existing policies and proposes a set of comprehensive guidelines to improve physical safety and security in Malaysian zoos. 6 animal malaysiaThis work is the culmination of collaborative efforts with numerous individuals and organizations. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN) and the Malaysian Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria (MAZPA) for their unwavering support and cooperation. We are equally grateful to the staff of Zoo Negara and Zoo Taiping, whose assistance and valuable input during the data collection process proved invaluable to the success of this study. It is our hope that this book will serve as a meaningful contribution to policymakers, zoo management, and wildlife conservationists, inspiring actionable steps toward creating safer and more secure zoo environments across Malaysia. By bridging existing gaps and learning from international practices, we aspire to ensure that Malaysian zoos continue to thrive as safe spaces for wildlife preservation and visitor education.
