Abstract
In many countries, school bus services are considered as effortless options for parents to pickup and drop off their children to their schools. However, in Zanzibar, the current school bus monitoring safety protocols rely fully on manual procedures where school bus driver is responsible to ensure the child’s safety in the entire journey. This make parents to be more distressed regarding their wards. Thus, an IoT-based school bus monitoring technology has been considered in this research. This study seeks to explore the identification of key parameters for IoT-based solutions made specifically to the geographical area of Zanzibar. The purpose of such system is to ensure safety and convenient school bus transportation while allowing parents to stay updated on their children’s boarding and deboarding status and their locations. The insights from both literature review and preliminary interview conducted were combined to identify relevant parameters that will be applicable to Zanzibar. The literature review identified several parameters commonly used in IoT based school bus monitoring systems, however interview with key stakeholders revealed additional parameters specific to Zanzibar. The final set of parameters were chosen based on their relevance, feasibility and adaptability to the Zanzibar area. This research contributes to the development of IoT solutions that can enhance the monitoring and safety of school bus transportation in Zanzibar.
