Abstract
The combination of augmented reality technology and tabletop exercises has the potential to improve the effectiveness of disaster preparedness training. The objective of this review is to describe the existing literature on the adoption of augmented reality as sustainable disaster preparedness training for tabletop exercises. The literature search for relevant studies published between 2013 and 2023 was conducted via Web of Science, ProQuest, Scopus, Science Direct, PubMed, and ClinicalKey for Nursing. A total of eight studies were included in this narrative review. The review provided significant findings for answering the research questions on the advantages and disadvantages of AR in disaster preparedness training and the effectiveness of a sustainable disaster preparedness training approach for tabletop exercises with the adoption of AR. It is reported that AR can significantly enhance knowledge retention through contextual learning and real-time feedback during training. However, this review had limitations due to the limited number of literatures on this topic which resulted in a knowledge gap on this topic and further studies are needed for the future that may be useful in adding to the body of knowledge in this area.
