Abstract
Background: Indonesian herbal medicine has been utilized for communities in the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of various health conditions, as well as in the promotion of overall well-being. It is also commonly used as a complementary approach alongside modern medical therapies. Objectives: This International Community Service (PkM) initiative aimed to enhance the knowledge of the international community residing in Kampung Alor Batu, Kuantan, Malaysia, concerning the potential benefits and risks associated with Indonesian herbal medicine. Additionally, the program sought to promote a healthy lifestyle grounded in traditional Malaysian-Indonesian values and wisdom. Methods: The PkM activity was conducted through three offline educational sessions: (1) an introduction to the therapeutic uses of Indonesian herbal medicine, (2) a discussion on the potential risks and adverse effects of herbal medicine, and (3) guidance on adopting a healthy lifestyle. Results: A total of 20 residents from Kampung Alor Batu participated in the program. Post-activity evaluations demonstrated an improvement in participants' knowledge regarding both the advantages and potential risks of herbal medicine. The mean knowledge scores increased following the educational sessions. Moreover, participants reported an enhanced understanding of healthy lifestyle practices aimed at improving physical stamina, energy levels, and reducing the risk of chronic illness. Impact: The International PkM initiative significantly contributed to increasing health literacy among foreign residents in Kuantan, particularly in relation to the informed use of Indonesian herbal medicine for disease prevention, treatment, and recovery.
