Abstract

Introduction: Living with chronic wounds goes beyond physical discomfort, impacting emotional well-being, daily activities, and overall quality of life. Those affected often face challenges like ongoing pain, restricted mobility, and social stigma. Wounds can lower patients’ quality of life, causing distress. Purpose: This study aims to explore patients’ experiences of living with lower extremity wounds and their perceptions of wound healing. Methods: A qualitative study using face-to-face semi-structured interviews was conducted among five patients with lower extremity wounds admitted to Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM. Participants were purposively selected from inpatients and the interviews were continued until data saturation was reached. The interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Six core themes emerged: symptoms, impact on daily life, emotional responses, social support, perceptions of treatment and healing as well as management. Conclusion: Living with wounds was often distressing and demotivating due to significant disruptions in daily routines. Continuous support from close family and friends played a crucial role in fostering a positive mindset and maintaining hope for recovery. This study provides insights into the multifaceted challenges of wound healing, highlighting both physical and psychological impacts on patients.
