Abstract

E-cigarettes (e-cigs) are commonly believed to be safer than conventional cigarettes. There are at least thirty-four tobacco and menthol-flavored e-cig products that have been authorized by the U.S. FDA. However, concerns exist regarding safety of e-cigarettes and the need to quit vaping especially among never smokers. This chapter aims to evaluate the effectiveness of different methods for quitting e-cigs. Studies show that interactive text messaging was significantly successful in quitting e-cigs at both the 30-day and 7-day point prevalence of abstinence (PPA) at the three- and seven-month follow-up. Vape taper and varenicline were found to be helpful in aiding people to quit vaping after three months of treatment. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) increased the likelihood of vaping cessation at three and six months in half of the studies reviewed. In combination with other measures, counseling has successfully contributed to quitting e-cig use. The side effects from using all interventions were categorized as low. All e-cig cessation interventions were effective with no major safety issues.
