Abstract

Markets act as places for commerce, culture and community. Whether they operate temporarily onthe street or permanently in a building, markets face the challenges of gentrifi cation as citiesdevelop over time. Some markets can thrive after they have been revitalised and physicallytransformed. However, some have degenerated at the expense of modernisation. This chapterdiscusses the typologies of markets in Malaysia as part of the Southeast Asian urban vernacular. Itexplores the Kuala Lumpur street market as a visible spatial culture; the Pasar Payang urban marketin Terengganu that is now going through the process of redevelopment; and Pasar Siti Khadijah inKelantan, which is well-known for its predominantly female vendors and octagonal building shape. From the social, economic and cultural sustainability perspective, the traditional market is viewed asa platform that integrates these three dimensions. In the three markets investigated, the authenticity of the off erings, particularly the local food and local products, was the primary lure. Itsserendipitous quality and experience as vendors and buyers bargain and its spatial characteristicsadaptable to spatial function build the symbiotic interaction between the physical site and people, shaping the sense of place.
