Abstract
Traditional Malay medicine refers to various treatment methods intimately con- nected to the Malay people living in the Kepulauan Riau. These Muslimah profess and practise the teachings of Islam, but they still strongly believe in traditional medicinal treatments, therapies, and healings. As of today, the Malay Muslim communities in Pulau Penyengat, Kepulauan Riau still put the importance of using traditional knowledge due to a variety of fac- tors, including their strong belief in the transmittable local knowledge from one generation to the next; the old habits die hard and are instilled from an early age, and the numerous available reliable manuscripts and references. This heritage is still widely recognised. Naturally, they prefer traditional medical treatment to combat and prevent sickness. Modern civilisation impacts many aspects of their lives. However, the people continue to accept their medicinal heritage. Balancing the dichotomous dimensions of modern and traditional, Islamic and kufur is a clear challenge. Discerning any negative speculation related to contradicting Islamic teachings is indeed complex. Hence, the scope of this study includes the understanding, perceptions, and experiences of the people who use traditional medicinal knowledge in their every- day practices.
