Abstract

Background In the Malaysian context, the figures for smokers and smoking-related diseases, including cardiovascular disease, are of grave concern. Bearing the fact that Malaysia has a shorter history of implementing tobacco control measures, smokers continue to smoke despite having cardiovascular disease. Objective This study aims to assess nicotine dependency among cardiovascular patients. Material & method A descriptive study in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia by reviewed medical records and assessment of nicotine dependency by using Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). Results A total of 218 smokers are recruited, FTND scored showed 45.0 % in high dependency, 33.0 % inmoderate dependency, and 22.0 % in low dependency. This study also shows 80.3 % of participants have a positive attitude toward continuity in smoking. Only 25.2 % perceive they had withdrawal symptoms while trying to stop smoking. Conclusion In conclusion, a concerning finding regarding the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND)results among cardiovascular patients, revealing a high prevalence of nicotine dependency. Thisraises important implications for healthcare professionals and policymakers alike. Additionally, the identified low rate of smoking cessation within this patient population emphasizes the urgent need for targeted interventions and comprehensive smoking cessation programs tailored specifically for individuals with cardiovascular conditions. The data presented in this study not only sheds light on the prevalence of nicotine dependence but also underscores the imperative for healthcare strategies that to address smoking cessation as an integral component of cardiovascular care.
