Abstract

The Guideline for the Insertion and Management of Short Peripheral Catheters (SPC) in Adults for Registered Nurses was developed based on best practices with the aim of preserving vessel health and improving patient outcomes. Specific Objectives The specific objectives of the guideline are to guide and educate nurses to: 1. Insert short peripheral catheters based on best practices. 2. Manage adults with a short peripheral catheter. 3. Preserve vessel health through the prevention of complications. Clinical Questions The clinical questions addressed in this guideline are: 1. What are the current best practices that need to be followed in inserting and managing short peripheral catheters? 2. How can the rate of complications be reduced and vessel health preserved during and after short peripheral catheterisation? Target Population This guideline is for all adult clients who require short peripheral catheters during their stay in the hospital and the subsequent post-catheter care. Target Group This guideline is developed for Registered Nurses (RN) involved in inserting and managing short peripheral catheters. Process of Guideline Development The guideline was developed following consultation with a round table meeting of nursing managers, infection control clinicians, and nursing academicians. Feedback was also obtained from medical, pharmacy, and senior nursing officers and incorporated into the final version.
