Abstract
The relationship between discourse and identity is complex and multifaceted. The words we use, the way we use them, and the people we talk to all contribute to the way we see ourselves and the way others see us (Fairclough, 2003). It also implies that language is a significant tool for social construction as well as communication. Anglada-Tort, Krause and North (2019) and Hansen (2022) stated that music and songs do not only reflect cultural norms but also play significant roles in shaping one’s identities and views on relationships. Since gender is socially constructed and not biologically fixed, the identities associated with it are constantly challenged, negotiated and reconstructed. A study looking at contemporary songs is important as it mirrors the current realities of male and female identities, and the different representations commonly associated with them. In this study, the gender representations constructed by male and female lovers towards their own selves and their partners are being investigated by analysing 24 of the Billboard Top 100 chart songs.
