Abstract

The automotive industry in Malaysia is undergoing a significant shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) powered by lithium-ion batteries (LiBs), aligning with the government's commitment to sustainability and a circular economy. The Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021-2030 emphasizes EV promotion and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, supported by the National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020 aiming to position Malaysia as a regional EV manufacturing hub. Despite achievements like the MyBAS electric bus service, meeting EV adoption targets remains a challenge. Efficient disposal and recycling of spent LiBs are crucial to avoid environmental hazards, given their potential to release hazardous chemicals and heavy metals. Recycling LiBs not only sustains the EV industry but also conserves valuable resources. Implementing a comprehensive product-service system and improving LiBs management through specialized facilities and public awareness campaigns are essential for Malaysia's transition towards sustainable transportation.
