Abstract
Reading skill is one of the main language skills in language learning, and one of the ways to develop the skill is through high-quality exercises in textbooks, in which questions related to higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) are formed. This study aims to search the percentage of reading skill exercises and Bloom's classification of knowledge levels in form Four and Five Arabic language textbooks. It also strives to find the percentage of reading skill exercises that fall in the lower and higher levels of thinking in them, as well as revealing the points of agreement and differences between the reading skill exercises from the point of view of Bloom's cognitive classification. The research data were collected by analyzing the content of the Arabic language textbooks, according to Bloom's cognitive classification, in consultation with experts in this field. The results revealed that the questions of the level of understanding, at 32%, are the most frequently mentioned in the form Four Arabic language textbook. Meanwhile, as for the form Five Arabic textbook, questions from the level of remembrance prevailed over the others by 27%. It was found that the questions about the level of creativity were not available at all in both textbooks. Most of the exercises in the Arabic language book for the Fourth and fifth years focused on the lower levels of thinking, 80% from the form Four textbook and 76% from the form Five textbook. The distribution of questions in form Four and Five Arabic language books is uneven according to Bloom’s cognitive classification.
