Abstract

The traditional teaching method using expositive class has limitations as the only way of knowledge transmission relies on the relationship between educator and student. The motivation to explore other teaching methods is also stimulated by the poor results among the students in physiology. Interestingly, scientific advocacy and outreach programs are encouraged to increase students and targeted population understanding of scientific knowledge. However, there are lacking of evaluation of these events’ effectiveness in basic health science subjects. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the effectiveness of outreach-based project as an experiential learning process in physiology. We partnered with a government school located in Kuantan, Pahang where 80 students were participated in 5 hours of respiratory physiology-based activities presented by 30 students from the International Islamic University Malaysia. The theme chosen is ‘Mind your own lungs!’ which aimed to educate the students regarding the smoking’s effect towards the healthy of the lungs. The event includes presentation of the physiology of respiratory system followed by hands-on demonstration and activities. Each session concluded with 15 min of questions and answers (Q&A). Each Q&A session was audio recorded and evaluated using thematic analysis to identify patterns in the Q&A data. Two major themes of questions were identified: 1) scientific content and 2) public health-related content. We conclude that the outreach and knowledge transfer to the public are effective in generating short-term interest in STEM content for both students and participants. The results of this study will also facilitate informed modification of event content to better suit student's interests.
