Abstract

Background and aims: The large number of comorbidities among older people have resulted in frequent oral health neglect in this population. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the association between socio-demographics, knowledge, and attitude related to oral health among older people. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, involving 359 individuals who were 60 years and older in the community setting in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia. A questionnaire that was distributed through social media platforms was used for data collection. It consisted of four parts: socio-demographic, self-perceived oral status, knowledge, and attitude. Meanwhile, data analysis was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 26.0. Findings: The mean total score for knowledge was moderately good, 17.42 (SD: 5.74), and the mean total score for attitude was positive, 36.20 (SD: 6.06). Educational level (P = 0.01) and frequency of dental visits (P = 0.02) were significantly associated with knowledge. There were significant associations between marital status (P = 0.01), educational level (P = 0.00), and frequency of dental visits (P = 0.01) with attitude. This study also found that there was a positive correlation between knowledge and attitude related to oral health among older people [r = 0.38, P = 0.00]. Conclusion: The knowledge of oral health was moderately good and the attitude toward oral health was positive among older people living in the community. Oral health promotion in the future should target those who are divorced or widowed with low educational levels and who have not visited dental clinics.
