Abstract

Introduction: Being treated in the ICU can contribute to psychological problems and negative emotional outcomes for the mechanically ventilated patients, and one of the factors that may lead to such consequences is ineffective communication. As a nurse in the ICU, while providing nursing care, nurses must appreciate the uniqueness of each MVP and try to promote health and well-being as much as possible. To do so, nurses must help the MVP fulfil their needs as much as possible. Hence, the best way to provide appropriate care based on the MVP’s needs is by properly listening to the their ‘voice’. Methodology: A generic qualitative study was conducted, and the purposive sampling method was used. All the related documents were selected after meeting the inclusion criteria of this study. Findings: Documents were divided into three themes: a) policy and guidelines; b) records and references; and c) communication methods. The theme policy and guideline revealed that the hospital briefly stated the importance of giving information to the patient and their right to get an explanation. Under record and references, there was one form and a nursing report that gave some insight on the issue. For instance, the form needs to be filled out every two hours, and the components in the form require the nurse to get the information from the MVP. However, nothing in the nurse’s report stated about communication activities between the nurse and MVP. The ABC board fell under the communication method theme, which in this study was defined as any tools that have been used in helping nurse-patient communication in the ICU. Conclusion: From all of the documents chosen for this study, it can be said that not much communication activity was reported by the nurse. Thus, other methods were conducted for the researcher to understand and make sense of the selected phenomenon about the communication between nurse and MVP, which was observation in the ICU and an in-depth interview with the ICU nurse who took care of the MVP.
