Abstract
Arabic is the second language that affects Malay word loans after the arrival of Islam in the Malay Archipelago, especially in Malaya. The process of borrowing words from Arabic in terms morphological, phonetic, and semantic, as well as elements of Arabic in the names of Malays, institutions, etc. Arabic word loans in Malay language are about 2,000 words in Al-Hamid dictionary and Glossary of Terms. However, all the words borrowed from Arabic do not carry the same meaning from their original language, until they cause errors in the understanding of Quranic verses in Malay society. Therefore, the aim of this research is to find out the Malay words are borrowed from Arabic and the types of semantic changes between these two languages depending on the qualitative descriptive approach by analyzing Malay words borrowed from Arabic written with "Ar" in the Hall Dictionary of the fourth edition that carry religious meanings and words with significant differences between the two languages. The study found 106 Malay words borrowed from Arabic written with "Ar," which has religious meaning and changes their meaning from their original meaning. Hence, 56 words are semantic transfer type, 46 words are semantic allocation type, and one word from semantic generalization type. The researcher suggested conducting the research by analyzing Malay words borrowed from Arabic in novels and songs.
