Abstract
The perinatal period is well-known period of extreme change either physically or emotionally for some women, making them at high risk of developing mental health disorders. The most common types of the disorders are perinatal depression and anxiety. Although women across cultures shared some similarities in their perinatal and anxiety experiences, there have been some culturally unique experiences that have not been observed in other parts of the world. For instance, Asian women associate their postnatal depression experiences with the issue of cultures and traditions during the postnatal period. Many Malaysian women perceived perinatal depression and anxiety as personal issue which requires no attention from the healthcare practitioners, therefore seeking professional help does not seem important to them. This session aims to understand how women conceptualize the signs and causes of perinatal depression and anxiety based on vignettes.
