Abstract

Communication through social media is a common thing nowadays as technology advances throughout the year. Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp have changed people’s lives with the internet based communication that is no longer bound to time and distance. The purpose of this study is to examine the politeness strategies used by social media users when commenting on celebrities' Instagram accounts. The data were collected from the comment sections of Justin Bieber's Instagram accounts and analysed using Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness strategies theory. The results show four politeness strategies used by the Instagram user when commenting on Justin Bieber's posts, namely positive politeness, negative politeness, bald-on-record, and off-record. It was hoped that by conducting this study, social media users would be able to communicate politely and with respect for others.
