Abstract
Mental health for adolescence is a critical area of study whether there are high or low cases of mental disorders among them. Adolescence is a stage of development that is filled with many changes in one’s physical, psychological, and social being. A study by Ang and friends found that depressive symptoms among the adolescents (secondary school students) were associated with type of class (Arts or Science), parents’ marital status, and rule-breaking behaviours. The National Health and Morbidity Survey 2017 conducted by Institute for Public Health, Ministry of Health Malaysia revealed that approximately 20% of teenagers were depressed, 40% anxious and 10% stressed, with some 764,000 attempted suicides. A review examining mental illness among adolescents showed that between 2014-2015, a total of 3073 cases of teenagers’ mental cases were reported which led to depression . A critical problem of mental health issues is that they are associated strongly to other problems such as suicide ideation, as in the case of major depression . Issues of mental health has been debated by numerous Muslim scholars of classical and contemporary times. Nevertheless, the Western knowledge on mental health prevails to become source of reference to this date while Muslim scholars had offered rich details on the theoretical and conceptual structure of mental health. It is the focus of this study to identify constructs derived from conceptual analysis of terms offered by Muslim scholars. Thus, this study attempts to probe into details of data offered by Muslims scholars on the conceptual and theoretical aspect of stress and mental health. In doing so, classical and contemporary Muslim scholars were identified among Muslim philosophers and commentators of the Qurʾan. Islam values highly insights offered by intellectuals and scholars as long as they are in harmony with whatever laid by the Qurʾan for the guidance of Muslims.
